Saints lose to Brunswick

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy softball team lost to Brunswick Academy 6-4 Wednesday in the VISAA state tournament.
After suffering a loss to Greenbrier Academy a week before in the conference championship game, the Lady Saints lost in the Division II state playoffs quarterfinals to Brunswick Academy while having home field advantage. Coach Brittany Wilkins said the loss came from a combination of different things.
“We had eight errors,” she said. “It was a little bit mental, a little bit physical, but the eight errors were physical on the field,” said Wilkins. “If you look at the box score we had seven hits and they had four, yet we had eight errors and they had zero.”
Wilkins said pitcher Katie Peelen was a bright spot in the game. Peelen held Brunswick to just four hits and one earned run. Other than the exploits of Peelen, Wilkins couldn’t find too many things to be ecstatic about.
“We did not deserve to win,” Wilkins said. “Not with the way we played defensively.”
After the game, Wilkins expressed to her team that the other team deserved to win after the Saints gave them eight errors.
“The reason I coach softball is not because of how much I love the game,” Wilkins said. “It’s simply because of what softball has taught me and given me over the years, and there’s so many life lessons that can be learned.
“I brought it full circle to them that team work is a life skill, and if there’s anything we can take away from this year, it’s that we need to learn how to work as a unit.”
