The fourth annual Thomas J. O’Connor IV memorial fishing tournament is giving back to the community by sending Boy Scouts to summer camp.

Jett Johnson is the founder of the tournament of which he named it in the memory of his brother, Thomas J. O’Connor IV. This year’s event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon June 4 at 3201 Holland Road.

“It was originally a memorial fund in the memory of my brother, who passed away, but starting this year we will be able to donate to local Boy Scout troops to make sure it’s not an issue for kids with financial needs to go to camp,” said Johnson.

Since its beginnings three years ago, the tournament has been able to raise more than $50,000 in donations. Johnson named the tournament after his brother, because O’Connor was an outdoorsman who loved being outside and was also a Boy Scout.

“It’s what my brother would have wanted,” said Johnson. “It’s rewarding to give back to the community.”

Participants can sign up the day of the event.

“We probably have about 100-plus people fishing every year, and it’s always a pretty big turn out.”

Reminiscing about the first year, Johnson recalls how the initial tournament was pretty much thrown together. He wanted to do something in his brother’s memory and was surprised by the turn out.

“The first year we threw it together in a couple of weeks and we were absolutely overwhelmed by how generous people were and how many people showed up,” Johnson said. “The first year, I think we raised about $10,000 dollars in that one day. It was an amazing first year, and that’s what inspired us to keep going.”

Johnson sees no end in sight, as he plans to hold this tournament every year and be able to help the Boy Scouts annually.

His goal is to make sure that kids can enjoy being a Boy Scout without financial limitations.

The tournament fishing will take place from the shoreline on six ponds on the farm. There are cash prizes for first, second and third place. The event will also include games, music, raffles, a silent auction and lunch.
