Marion Hughes Matthews

Marion Hughes Matthews, 84, departed this life on May 21, 2016, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk.

She was a native of Norfolk and the daughter of the late John T. Hughes and Katie Sue Howlett Hughes, of Norfolk. She was predeceased by her husbands, Sewanee Matthews, of Memphis, Tenn., and Columbus Rawlings, of Southampton County.

Marion leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Colonius A. Rawlings Jr. and Vincent B. Rawlings, of Suffolk; one stepdaughter, Linda Piersawl, of Tampa, Fla.; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Marion was a member of East End Baptist Church, where she served as past superintendent of the Sunday school. She was semi-retired but often actively participated in counseling and Sunday school activities. Periodically, she attended Tabernacle Baptist Outreach Center, Nansemond Parkway. Formerly, she provided educational extension services through Virginia University of Lynchburg, Pleasant Union Baptist Church, Suffolk.

Marion was basileus of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Alpha Chi Chapter of Portsmouth, for two terms; and a member of The Portsmouth Alumnae Chapter, Alpha Beta Sigma of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. She served as matron of the Eastern Star, Mount Hermon Temple Chapter. She was recognized as “Woman of the Year” by the National Association of Professional Women. She was recognized by the City of Suffolk Fine Arts Commission.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at Harris Funeral Home, 685 Carolina Road, Suffolk, VA 23434, (757) 539-6500. The family requests flowers be sent to the funeral home no later than Tuesday, May 24, 2016, by 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that individuals make memorial contributions to Southeastern Virginia Chapter, Alzheimer’s Association, 6350 Center Drive, Suite 102, Norfolk, VA 23502.
