Suffolk police and firefighters responded to two crashes on the same stretch of U.S. Route 58 westbound on Tuesday morning.

The first crash happened at 7:22 a.m. just before the downtown Suffolk exit. It involved two passenger vehicles, a tractor-trailer and a dump truck, according to a city press release. Two lanes of travel were open immediately following the accident, with one lane closed due to the heavy amount of debris in the roadway.

All of the drivers and passengers involved in the accident were assessed by Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel. The driver and a passenger in a Nissan Altima were taken by ground ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to the release. No other injuries were reported.

All lanes of the affected roadway reopened at 8:30 a.m. Less than 20 minutes later, emergency crews again responded to the same section of roadway for a single-vehicle crash.

This one involved a Honda Accord that struck a tree in the median westbound just past the weigh scales. It happened at 8:48 a.m. Two of the westbound lanes were shut down immediately following the accident.

The adult male required extrication by Suffolk Fire & Rescue personnel and was airlifted by Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The cause of both crashes remains under investigation.
