The club expects to draw about 1,000 people to its 34th annual barbecue on June 15 at the former Tidewater Community College campus, at the end of College Drive in Suffolk, said Portsmouth Rotary Club member Steve Milner. The event runs from 3 to 9:30 p.m. with local band, Strictly Bizzness, performing from 6 to 9:30 p.m.

Tickets are $35 in advance or $45 at the gate and include all-you-can-eat chicken and barbecue prepared by Rodman’s Bar-B-Que, soft drinks and alcohol. Tickets can be purchased online at www.portsmouthvarotary.org or at TowneBank branches in Suffolk, Churchland and Portsmouth.

“We are looking forward to another great event,” said Chairman Allen “Bubba” Bynum.

According to Bynum, proceeds from the event will be used to fund the organization’s community and charitable activities throughout the year, such as supporting Edmarc Hospice for Children and Meals on Wheels.

“We also use the funds for scholarships, to host our annual first responder luncheon every December and to donate to a number of charities in our community throughout the year,” Milner said. “Everything that comes in (from this event) goes back out to serve the people of our community.”
