Man escapes submerged SUV

A man escaped his car after finding himself in a retention pond off U.S. Route 58 on Saturday.
Suffolk Police and Suffolk Fire & Rescue responded to the call behind the McDonald’s restaurant in the 1500 block of Holland Road about 3:40 p.m. Saturday.
The vehicle was reported driving recklessly, according to a city press release. When police arrived on scene, they found the Toyota SUV in the retention pond submerged up to the roof, with the single occupant out of the vehicle. The Suffolk Police dive team responded and verified there was no one else inside the vehicle.
The man was taken by ground ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment of injuries not considered life-threatening.
Marshavon Adams, 35, of Hampton, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license in relation to the accident, according to the city press release.
The incident remains under investigation.
