A local man is bringing a summer program for youngsters back for a third consecutive year.

Antwan Robinson Sr., together with his wife, Magaline Robinson, will hold the C.H.O.I.C.E (Children Helping Other Individuals ‘C’ Elevation) program from June 20 to Aug. 30 Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Salvation Army, 400 Bank St. The program will run from 2 to 5:30 p.m. each day.

The program includes educational elements, arts and crafts, sports, religious education and community service.

Robinson said he started the program with the hope of keeping other young people away from the same pitfalls he encountered as a troubled youth.

“I’m hoping they will not make the mistakes I’ve made in the past,” he said. “I hope they will stay positive and do the right thing, and don’t get out here and get involved with drugs, don’t get out here and get involved with gang activity.”

The program has been growing each year. Robinson said nearly 150 children participated last year. The year before that, it was about 90.

The program is open for ages 2 to 4 accompanied by an adult at all times, as well as for ages 5 to 18.

Robinson said he hopes people will donate materials, such as wood and paint, to be used in service projects, as well as volunteer their time to mentor or work on service projects with the youth.

“We do want more churches to get involved,” he said. Donations for the youngsters themselves, such as books, are also welcomed.
