Two workshops at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts on June 18 will feature lessons on photography and glassblowing from some of the best.

Bill and Linda Lane will hold a photography workshop that day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Neil Duman will hold a glass workshop from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Both sets of artists currently have exhibits at the center.

The Lanes are a married team that have won numerous awards, worked to promote Virginia State Parks through their photography and have conducted workshops up and down the East Coast.

The Lanes said many of their workshop participants want to know why their photos aren’t sharp.

“That is a biggie for everyone,” Linda Lane said. “Maybe some of them are missing certain equipment they really need, like a tripod.”

“It can be equipment, it could be technique, it could be too slow a shutter speed, it could be F-stop,” Bill Lane said.

Participants are urged to bring their cameras so they can ask questions about equipment or settings that they don’t understand.

The Lanes have been doing photography together for about 23 years. He was taking photos for about 10 years before they met.

“At the beginning, you don’t even know what questions to ask because you don’t know enough,” Bill Lane said. “We’ve really tried to hone in on what we think people need and then try to figure out the simplest way to get it across. It’s advanced enough that at least you’ll get an idea of what’s out there.”

“We’re trying to keep other people from making the mistakes he made at the beginning,” Linda Lane said. “We’re cutting down the learning experience time.”

In addition to equipment and other technical aspects of photography, the couple will discuss the art of composition.

“It’s kind of like the art of seeing, learning how to see something other than what you see all the time,” Linda Lane said.

Duman’s glassblowing workshop will take place outdoors at the center. He’ll bring his small portable furnace and allow 30 minutes per person for personal instruction on making a piece of art for the participant to take home.

“I let people decide if they want to make an ornament or if they want to try a glass,” he said.

The workshop is appropriate for beginners, and he’s ready to provide as much help as they need, Duman said.

“Everybody will be happy with what they get,” he said.

The process takes about 30 minutes from start to finish.

“You’re in constant motion for that 30 minutes,” he said. “Most glass you see in shows or galleries, all that’s done within 30 minutes or a little bit longer than that.”

Duman urged participants to wear sunglasses and closed-toed shoes and leave the polyester in the closet for the day.

“It’s hot,” he said of the inside of the furnace. “There is a possibility to get burnt. If something does pop or blow off, it could get between your toes.”

Duman’s workshop will not be held if the weather is rainy.

The cost for the photography workshop is $95, which includes lunch. The cost of the glassblowing workshop is $50.
