Police ID victim in fatal crash

UPDATED Tuesday 10 a.m.: Police have identified the victim as Kristin Bender, 22, of Suffolk. The passenger in Bender’s vehicle is in critical condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The operator of the other involved vehicle was treated for his injuries at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Suffolk Police Department.

Earlier: One person is dead and another was taken by helicopter to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries following a head-on collision on Nansemond Parkway Monday evening.

Officials said the road in the area of the crash, located in the 2700 block of Nansemond Parkway, has been closed and is expected to remain closed for several hours. Detours are in place.

Suffolk Dispatchers received a call about the accident at 5:46 p.m.

When fire and rescue personnel arrived on the scene, they found that a Hyundai Accent and a Honda Accord had collided head-on.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink, who stated in a release that the victim’s name is being withheld, pending notification of next of kin.

An adult female and an adult male received emergency medical assessment and treatment at the scene, and the woman was taken to Norfolk General with life-threatening injuries, according to Klink.

The man was taken to that hospital by ambulance with injuries considered to be non life-threatening.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
