Laugh along with police

Law enforcement is serious business, but sometimes even the police department has to have a little fun.

The Suffolk Police Department recently shared some of that fun with the world on Facebook, and about 79,000 people — quickly approaching the 90,000 population of Suffolk — have laughed along with them.

After shootings of police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge recently, police departments across the country have been blessed with an outpouring of support from their communities, and it has been no different in Suffolk.

Local police have received cards, visits, posters, food — yes, including doughnuts — and many thoughts and prayers in the past few weeks. Probably never in the history of the Suffolk Police Department has public support been this tangible, and edible.

But, as many have noted in recent weeks at National Night Out, a Black Lives Matter march and other events, Suffolk police maintain a positive overall relationship with the community, and it shows.

After the show of support, the department wanted to find a way to say “Thank you.” But it had to be equal to the community’s love, so they had to find a big way.

They hit upon the idea of having a video contest. They uploaded three videos created by different sections of the department this week and are asking for public input to determine which one gets the prize — food, of course.

The videos are hilarious and inspiring. They feature some good dancing, some bad dancing, some inside jokes, some good music, and even some making fun of their love for doughnuts.

The videos have been posted on the department’s Facebook page, and the community can vote by liking, sharing and viewing the videos. The one that receives the most likes, shares and views combined by noon on Aug. 17 will win.

So visit the Suffolk Police Department Facebook page, laugh, cry, cast your vote and share with your friends so they can vote, too.
