Nansemond River High School’s golf team has been making steady progress this year with a team loaded with upperclassmen.

The Warriors are six matches in, and coach Brandon Frye is proud of what he has been seeing.

“We are improving daily,” Frye said. “The last few seasons have been rebuilding years, but we are definitely improving and surprising while doing it.”

Last year, the Warriors had three seniors graduate and play at the next level. This year, the team has no shortage of upperclassmen. Out of 10 players, eight are juniors or seniors; the other two are sophomores.

Having six juniors on the team bodes well for Frye’s plan, which is to take the next step next year.

“We want to shoot better this season than last season,” he said. “We also want to qualify for regionals. Overall, we just want to have something positive to build on for next year. Next year, I see us taking a big step.”

To this point in the season, the Warriors have been led by two juniors, Isiah Marquez and John Wolfe.

“Our team has been pretty solid so far,” Wolfe said. “We always feel like we can do better. We all need to shave off a few strokes.”

The Warriors won 338-397 in their Wednesday match with Indian River. Marquez was the medalist, with a 79.

Next for the Warriors is a match against Western Branch High School at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nansemond River Golf Course.

So far for King’s Fork, the season has been filled with struggles. Though the team is inexperienced, coach Calvin Mitchell is taking on the challenge of helping his team improve.

For Mitchell, it is all about learning how each player learns the best and then coaching them up to their talent level.

“Each player has a different style of learning,” said Mitchell. “It is about coaching them by how they learn so they can do their best.”

Even though the last two years have been somewhat rebuilding, the team has sent at least one player to regionals each year. He believes that streak will continue this year as well.

“I have about four players who have the potential to make it to regionals,” he said. “We want to always have at least one represent us.”

King’s Fork would like to improve from their Conference 17 matches that happened Wednesday. The Bulldogs scored a 444 to Wilson High School’s 451.

Next for the Bulldogs is a match against Deep Creek, Hickory and Lakeland high schools at 11 a.m. Monday at Sleepy Hole Golf Course.
