Cheers for Bryan’s party

There’s enough negativity in the world today. That’s why it’s always nice to hear about people doing positive things.

So it was earlier this week, when a newly minted 13-year-old got a special birthday party at the North Main Street Chick-fil-A and more than 100 birthday cards from strangers around the country.

Bryan Phelps has trouble making friends due to his Asperger’s syndrome, said his mother, Kimberly Duncan. So he hasn’t had a real birthday party since he was little.

Thirteen is a big birthday, so she wanted to make sure it was special.

Duncan put out the call on Facebook three months ago. She wanted birthday cards from around the world. And they came in from Germany, Italy and more than a few U.S. states.

Bryan even got a video message and a birthday card from two of his favorite “Doctor Who” actors, John Barrowman and Simon Fisher-Becker.

The response didn’t end there. Nicki Dalton, the owner operator of the Chick-fil-A, saw the message and offered to give Bryan a surprise party at the restaurant.

In photos from the party, the excitement on Bryan’s face is palpable. He’s surrounded by balloons and grinning from ear to ear as Dalton and Teri Jernigan, the marketing director at Chick-fil-A, present him with goodies. A friend donated a three-level “Doctor Who”-themed cake, complete with a TARDIS on top.

One look at the photo tells you all you need to know about how happy Bryan was. And the people who made it so — from the people at Chick-fil-A to the family and friends who attended the party to the perfect strangers who sent cards — all deserve cheers for helping make Bryan’s birthday a great one.
