The Chuckatuck Volunteer Fire Department is looking for volunteers.

There are currently 50 volunteers on staff, according to Lt. Eddie Brock. But as those volunteers age, new and younger volunteers will be needed for the department.

“Over the years, the guys are going to be getting older,” Brock said. “We are trying to get younger guys in.”

The department would prefer to have applicants that are already certified as a Virginia Firefighter 1 and 2.

However, the station is still welcoming all applicants regardless of experience.

“We’ll take just about anybody who’s motivated to help the community,” Brock said.

The department provides training in-house. However, volunteers may also be sent to classes hosted at nearby volunteer departments.

To be considered as a volunteer, the department requires an application, a Department of Motor Vehicles driving record and a background check.

Once this information is processed, members of the membership committee will interview applicants. The department’s board of directors and staff will then sanction a majority vote to determine whether or not to hire the applicants.

There are several benefits to serving as a member of the department, including membership into the Virginia State Firefighter’s Association, continual public safety training and Virginia Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications.

Last but not least, members have the opportunity to serve and protect the community.

The department requires a monthly minimum of 24 hours of service from its members, according to Brock.

The department has served the Chuckatuck community for more than 60 years and serves as a site for several community and fundraiser events.
