Lakeland High School field hockey hosted Nansemond River High School on Monday, and the Lady Warriors came out victorious with a 4-2 win.

The Lady Warriors came out flat after not playing for a week and a half. After being down 1-0, they picked up their tempo and pushed for the win.

“After having time off, I’m glad my girls were able to come out and get a win,” Lady Warriors coach Allison Dize said. “You always feel great about a win over another Suffolk school.”

Though they won, Dize wants to see her team get off to a quicker start. Lakeland had played as recently as Saturday, which could have played a part in why Nansemond River didn’t start as quickly as they wanted.

“We shook off our slow start in the first half and picked it up in the second,” co-captain Ashlyn Rogers said. “We started finding gaps and connecting on our passes; we started to play Warriors field hockey.”

“I’m proud of how we worked past the goal deficit,” co-captain Ariana Samuel said.

The Lady Cavs felt they played the better first half until momentum for each team took a swing. At the beginning of the second half, the Lady Cavs lost a vital part of their offense in Kendall Lewis.

“Kendall is a big part in how we score,” the Lady Cavs’ Allison Thompson said. “When she got taken out, our intensity when down and NRHS started getting the upper hand.”

After the game, the Lady Cavs did feel they had done some good things to build upon.

“We were connecting very well with our passes,” Maddy Carr said. “We were very strong and played solid even though we had some adversity.”

Nansemond River was supposed to play their other cross-town rival, King’s Fork High School, last week, but it was rescheduled due to weather. However, Lakeland will be 1-1 against their rivals as they defeated the Lady Bulldogs and lost to the Lady Warriors.

“This game was competitive, and I enjoyed playing against them,” Thompson said.

Lady Warriors will be at home against Menchville High School in a Conference 10 match at 5:15 p.m. Sept. 29. Next, LHS will play their rescheduled Grassfield game at Grassfield at 5:15 p.m. Sept. 28.
