If the cancellation of Peanut Fest means you are missing some old-fashioned fall fair goodness in your life, you’re in luck.

That’s because Driver Days is this weekend, and the forecast shows virtually no chance of rain.

Driver Days has everything you’re missing and more: The fair food, family-friendly games and rides, musical entertainment, wing-eating contests and more.

It also features all the highlights of a community festival: A parade, a poker run, a pet costume contest, vendors and the opportunity to support local businesses.

This year’s event will feature the StrongWILL 5K run, which honors William West, who died of a drug overdose earlier this year. His sister, April Brooks, is organizing the event to bring attention to the dangers of drug addiction.

Also this year, Ronnie and Amy Shirley of reality television show “Lizard Lick Towing” will be on hand to sign autographs.

But the most important parts of Driver Days aren’t the fried food, the rides or even the games. It has two important aspects: helping businesses and helping the community.

First of all, the annual event helps bring attention to the businesses of Driver, a quaint but oft-ignored little town in Suffolk that is one of its greatest gems.

Driver has suffered in recent years from the closure of the Kings Highway Bridge, which made the trip there a lot longer for a significant portion of Suffolk and Western Tidewater. It also was hurt by the 2008 tornado, which tore through the town and destroyed several of the businesses.

So Driver businesses can use your support. But also, the festival supports local charities and organizations such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, the Driver Volunteer Fire Department and others.

“It’s not so much for the businesses but for the local charities we donate to,” said Derrold Mark, owner of a Driver business and treasurer of the festival.

There’s nothing better than businesses that believe in giving back to the community that supports them. Head out to Driver Days this weekend and support both.
