The North Suffolk Library will welcome some unique visitors next weekend.

On Oct. 22, members of The U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command Band will perform at the library.

“The community seems to really enjoy music programs,” Elizabeth Trop, senior outreach and programming services coordinator, stated in an email.

Trop said this will be the third or fourth time the band has performed at the library. The event is free of charge.

Four clarinet players from the band will perform tango, jazz, Klezmer, modern and classical arrangements. The event will conclude with a question and answer session.

The band originally formed in April 1931 as the Band, 2nd Coast Artillery. In April of the following year, the band was transferred to Fort Monroe.

In 1944, the band was re-designated as the 69th Army Ground Forces Band but later disbanded in October 1946. In October 1945, the 50th Army Ground Forces Band was established and later changed to the 50th Army Band in May 1947.

In June 1972, the band’s name was changed to The United States Continental Army Band and consolidated with California’s 69th Army Ground Forces Band.

Finally, in February 2006, the band received its current name.

The band consists of 10 ensembles ranging from concert band to marching band to smaller subsets such as the woodwind quintet and the jazz combo.

Maj. Randall Bartel serves as the band commander and conductor. Sgt. Maj. Phil Nicholson serves as the band sergeant major and enlisted bandleader.

Trop said the event appeals to all ages and attracts a sizeable crowd.

“In the past, we’ve had a wide audience range including local high school band members and those walking through the library at the time, who stop to listen to the wonderful music,” she stated.
