Gas leaks at water plant

Suffolk Fire & Rescue crews responded Thursday morning to a gas leak at the Lake Kilby Water Treatment Plant.
The incident was reported at 10:55 a.m. Battalion Chief William Kessinger stated in a city press release that a lawn service contractor struck a gas line with a mower near a monitoring and storage warehouse at the site, which is owned by the city of Portsmouth. Employees at that location were evacuated, and employees at other locations within the complex were asked to shelter in place, according to the release.
Virginia Natural Gas responded and secured the valve at the street at about 11:56 a.m. Dominion Virginia Power also responded due to natural gas flowing onto an outdoor electrical power pedestal, according to the release.
There were no injuries, no power disruption and no disruption of water service, the release stated.
