Q&A with Dr. Carletta Perry: Dream a new dream

Published 9:57 pm Tuesday, November 29, 2016

Q: I used to dream, but I don’t anymore. I can’t see my future, and I don’t know what to do.

A: Thank you for reaching out to me.

There are two things I would like to address with you. The first is your ability to dream. The second is not being able to see your future. Although they are related, let me begin with rediscovering your youth, your purpose, and passion.

When we are kids, we wanted to be police officers, doctors, superheroes and so forth. There was no limit to what we could imagine. In the teen years, many feel invincible and live like there is no tomorrow.

As we age, we try to plan for tomorrow. However, in the midst of aging, sometimes we stop dreaming or begin to feel that time is running out. But as long as we breathe, I believe we should dream. Let me help renew your spirit.

First, I want to write down all that you have accomplished and congratulate yourself for all that you have accomplished.

Second, I want you to put a star beside the things that you did not set as goals, but know that they are still dreams fulfilled.

Third, I want you to dream a new dream. In order to do this, I want you to ask yourself two questions: What is my passion, and how can I make a difference in the world? Ponder this for a while and search yourself for the right motives, for a genuine concern for others, and ensuring that you choose things that fit your personality.

Fit is very important. Start by searching for things you like to do, things that make you happy and things you want to do more. This will lead you to your passion.

When you find a dream filled with passion, you will love it so much that you can do it every day. In fact, when you choose a dream you are passionate about, many times, you will want to give it away for free, because you want to share it with others.

When you dream a new dream, you are automatically giving your future life.

It seems to me that you stopped dreaming your own dreams. Perhaps you are in someone else’s dream assisting them to push their purpose; this could be your children, your significant other or your job.

It’s time for you to take responsibility for your happiness. I want you to turn off the autopilot button for your life and be an active participant in your own dream.

It’s time to unleash your greatness and love the life you lead. The best is yet to come!
