Nansemond River High School’s girls’ basketball team grabbed a home win against Grassfield Friday night.
The Lady Warriors moved to 8-5 overall and 7-1 in Southeastern District play with the win. Nansemond River won 46-38, relying on their feisty defense.
“It was kind of a mixed bag,” Lady Warriors coach R. Calvin Mason Sr. said. “We play well defensively, but we haven’t hit a groove yet offensively. We’ve been pretty consistent defensively, though.”
The Lady Warriors had three girls in double figures. Briana Autrey led the way with 13 points. Cassidy Simmons followed up with 12 points. Nijha Shannon rounded out the three, adding 10 points.
The Lady Warriors were set to take on Lakeland Tuesday night, but due to weather the game will be rescheduled. The Lady Warriors won’t play again until Saturday, when they face Warwick High School in the King’s Fork Invitational this weekend.
Warwick currently sits behind Nansemond River in Conference 10 standings and only has three losses on the year. Despite days missed for snow, the Lady Warriors are confident there will be no rust going into Saturday’s matchup.
“It might help us to get away from the game just for a little bit but not too much,” Mason said. “We’ve played a lot of games and didn’t get much of a Christmas break. I don’t think these couple of days off will hurt us. We talk about the body needing rest, but sometimes the mind does too.”
Mason says one good thing about the Lady Warriors’ situation is that most all schools were out for the weather, so other teams are facing the same challenge as well.
The Lady Warriors will face Warwick High School Jan. 14 at 1:15 p.m. at King’s Fork High School.
