Light contest winners announced

Two decorating aficionados were named winners of the Cross Realty Christmas lights contest earlier this month.
The Chain family gathered more than 150 likes on a video of their home posted on the Cross Realty Facebook page to win the contest and $250 to put toward their power bill.
Keith Mitchell, a Suffolk Meadows resident, won the judge’s choice award and $150 prize for his power bill.
Travis and Shannon Chain, who live in Hillpoint, said they have no idea how many lights are on their house, but the mailbox alone had 800.
“Every year, we try to add something more to it or something better,” Shannon Chain said. “Last year, we didn’t have the lights that outline the flower garden, and we got a couple of new blow-ups. We just want to do more.”
The Chain children — Kayla, 6, and Avery, 3 — love the winter wonderland in their yard, their parents said.
Travis Chain worked about four to five hours a day over the course of four days to put up all the lights and decorations.
“It’s a labor of love, that’s for sure,” he said.
Shannon Chain helped make repairs when things went awry throughout the season. She also shared the video multiple times on Facebook, stumping for votes from family and friends.
It worked — the family won the $250 award for getting the most likes on Facebook.
The monetary award almost exactly covers the family’s power bill for the holiday season, which usually is less than half of that, Travis Chain said.
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t still plan to go bigger and better next year.
“Look for it next year,” he said.
Mitchell said he was “blown away” to find out he had won judge’s choice.
“I thought it was great,” he said. “I enjoyed it a lot. It’s only going to make me go even bigger this year.”
Mitchell decked out his house with more than 200,000 lights, including a tunnel of 13,000 lights over his driveway. He said his power bill typically rises only about $25 to $30 during the holiday season, because all of the lights are energy-efficient LED lights.
Mitchell said it took him about three weeks to set up his lights this year, and about two full days to take it all down.
There were about 10 entries in the contest, which Cross Realty conducted on its Facebook page. It was co-sponsored by the Suffolk News-Herald.
“We thought the contest was a lot of fun,” Lee Cross said. “We got a really good response, and everybody had fun doing it. We appreciate everybody playing along and getting in the spirit and having fun with it.”
The judges were Cross’s daughters, ages 6, 4 and 20 months.
This was the second year of the contest, and Cross said he plans to have it again next year. The company also runs other Facebook contests throughout the year, including one asking fans to guess when it will snow.
“I’m a little nervous to do that after last week,” he admitted, “although I will say two of the three judges are very excited to get more snow.”
