Nansemond River High School’s Brandon Eubanks was voted Duke Automotive player of the week after helping his swim team get wins over Great Bridge and Western Branch. Eubanks placed first in seven events that week and placed second in another.
Eubanks is a junior swimmer for Nansemond River. He is part of what could be a historic season for the Warriors. The team is on pace to win the most regular-season meets in school history. On Jan. 19, the Warriors’ boys’ swim team defeated Western Branch, which was also a first in school history. That same week, they beat Great Bridge, as well.
“We were all just trying our hardest to beat both teams,” Eubanks said. “Individually I felt like I swam good and to the best of my abilities.”
Against Great Bridge, Eubanks finished first in every event he competed in. He placed first in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke with times of 52.62 and 1:02.07. Also, he was a part of a first-place 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard free relay.
In the meet against Western Branch, he placed first in the 100-meter butterfly and 400-meter freestyle. He was a part of a 200-meter medley relay team that placed second and a 400-meter freestyle relay team that placed first.
Eubanks has been enjoying his junior year. He is enjoying numerous first place finishes and watching his times fall.
The junior swimmer remains dedicated at all times to his craft. Whenever he has an opportunity to practice, he takes advantage of that time to make himself better.
Prior to the beginning of the season, Eubanks set a goal for himself. He wanted to break one minute in the 100 fly. In an invitational meet on Jan. 14, he accomplished that goal, swimming the event in a time of 58.4
“I was very excited to see that I had reached my goal,” he said. “It helped me start to set new goals for my times.”
Eubanks is motivated by his team and coaches. His brother, Logan, was a two-time state champion swimmer at Nansemond River and is currently freshman swimmer at George Mason. Logan inspires Brandon to live up to the legacy he left at Nansemond River.
Brandon says teammates Zach and Parker Doleman, Zane Roberts and Connor Meyers inspire him, as well. One of his favorite moments of the season thus far has been when he raced teammate Parker Doleman in the 500 and beat him by a tenth of a second
“He is a good kid,” Warriors swim coach James “Shamus,” Riley said. “Just from last year to this year, he is an entirely different kid. His times are magnificent, and they keep dropping. He just keeps getting quicker and quicker.”
Eubanks and Nansemond River swim teams will be in action Feb. 3 when the Conference 10 tournament starts. They will swim against Menchville High School at Midtown Community Center pool in Newport News.
