Leslie Hardy Matthews Sr.

Leslie Hardy Matthews Sr., 77, of Suffolk, passed away Feb. 11, 2017. He was born in Greenville County to the late Bythel L. and Carrie D. Matthews. He was also predeceased by his brother, Fred Matthews, and sister and brother-in-law, Shirley M. and Ed Parker. Leslie was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Cape Hatteras Baptist Church and an honorary lifetime member of the Associated Locksmiths of America. Leslie was an avid duckpin bowler.
Leslie is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Carolyn M. Matthews; daughter, Tiffany C. Turner; sons and daughter-in-law, Leslie H. Matthews Jr. and wife, Lara, and Mickey T. Matthews; grandchildren, Destiny C. Turner, April M. Turner, Shawn Joseph Merriman and Sara A. Matthews; great-grandchildren, Brendyn Keith Douglas and Serenity C. Turner; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Art Williamson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph B. and Mary Matthews and James A. and Roni Matthews; longtime friend, Glenda Brown; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. The family would like to thank the nurses of Sentara Obici Hospital, 2nd floor step down, for their love and care of Leslie.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at 2 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434 with Joseph Matthews officiating. Entombment will follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
