Ravine fire ruled arson

A brush fire that happened on Thursday has been ruled arson, and the fire marshal’s office is seeking tips, according to a city press release.
The brush fire was reported at 5:06 p.m. in the 300 block of Newport Street behind the Butler Paper Recycling facility. The first crews arrived at 5:12 p.m.
Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the fire, which was about 10 to 20 feet away from the building, according to the press release. The ravine is about 30 feet deep, and about one-quarter to one-half of an acre was burned, according to the release. The fire was called under control at 5:48 p.m.
Three juveniles were seen running from the area immediately following the incident, according to Lt. Charles Chapin, fire marshal.
“He reminds citizens to stay vigilant, and if they see suspicious behavior or activity, to call 911,” the release stated.
