Fun family run on the way

Bennett’s Creek will be the backdrop for a fun morning of family-friendly running this May.
Healthy Suffolk is holding its ninth annual 5K run/walk on May 13 at Bennett’s Creek Park. Adults and children may also sign up for a one mile run, instead.
“It’s not a highly charged, competitive race,” Healthy Suffolk program manager Deborah Nadell said. “It’s not a high-pressure race. It’s perfect for those who race a lot or total beginners.”
The organization is expanding the race this year with a day of family activities. Children can enjoy inflatable attractions and obstacle courses, and food trucks will be available for post-race nourishment.
Sign-in will begin at 6:30 a.m. and warm-up at 7 a.m. Racers will start and end at the park’s start/finish line, with nearby parking readily available. Runners will wind through woods and neighborhoods on friendly terrain.
“It’s a nice, level course throughout,” Nadell said.
Registration is $10 before May 5, and $15 after that until race day. Children 12 and under can run free of charge. Free T-shirts will be given to all runners.
Healthy Suffolk — formerly known as Suffolk Partnership for a Healthy Community — holds two fundraising runs each year, with typically 400 walkers and runners in attendance, Nadell said.
“We do have some people come out for this course that are practicing for other races,” she said.
The nonprofit organization’s goal is to convince residents to make healthy lifestyle choices and to provide them with healthcare resources for mental and physical health.
“We’re committed to the health of the citizens of Suffolk,” Nadell said.
