Several residents in the Lakeside neighborhood were evacuated from their homes Tuesday evening while authorities worked on an incident at a nearby home.
City spokeswoman Diana Klink stated in a press release that there were “potential hazardous chemicals” in the backyard of a home in the 200 block of Bosley Avenue.
However, after an investigation, the chemicals were determined to be safe and legal, Klink stated in the release.
Emergency Communications received a call about the chemicals at 7:18 p.m., Klink stated in the press release. After preliminary investigation, the Fire Marshal’s Office determined that surrounding residences should be evacuated.
Residents were evacuated from their homes in the 200 and 300 blocks of Bosley Avenue and several residents in the 700 block of Maryland Avenue, Klink stated.
The Virginia State Police hazmat team was called out to assist in the initial investigation, Klink stated.
Further investigation found that the chemicals were safe and legal, Klink stated. Residents who had been evacuated were permitted back into their homes about 9:50 p.m.
“Public safety officials would like to thank the affected residents for their patience, as out of the abundance of caution for their safety the evacuations were made,” Klink stated.
The incident is still under investigation.
