Lady Bulldogs get much needed break

King’s Fork High School’s girls’ soccer team is hoping spring break will bring some much-need healing time.
The Lady Bulldogs went 1-0-1 this week in matchups with Nansemond River High School and Oscar Smith High School. After a loss to the Lady Warriors Tuesday, the matchup with Oscar Smith the following day ended in a tie. They’ve been making adjustments over the last week and a half, due to injuries and players feeling under the weather.
Prior to this week, the Lady Bulldogs had a tough game against Grassfield High School. King’s Fork was the first team to score against Grassfield this season. They lost their top scorer, Cydney Nichols, in that game, along with a couple of other players, which made this week a hard one for the Lady Bulldogs.
Needless to say, getting healthy is the No. 1 priority for King’s Fork, and spring break will provide them an opportunity to do so.
Hannah Marston has been doing a good job stepping up for the Lady Bulldogs amid injuries.
“We moved her to center back in the Nansemond River game,” Coach Marston said. ” We played defense first, because we were so under-maned. She had some incredible track-back plays on some of their best players.”
Because she played so well in that role, Marston will look for ways to keep using that strategy, even when his team is healthy. Over the break, Marston wants to continue to keep his team in shape as he gets his key players back.
“We want to go rested up, but we will also do some conditioning work,” he said. “Nothing high-stress — we want to kind of make it physical therapy for all of their joints.”
After the break, King’s Fork has a tough stretch of games, including three the week they return. One will be a matchup against Conference 17 opponent Deep Creek, and another will be against a tough Kellam High School team.
“By all accounts, Kellam maybe the best team in the area,” Marston said. “That game will be a good measuring scale for us. Our girls like to rise to the occasion against tough opponents.”
