Healthy Kids Day on Saturday

Bounce houses, an obstacle course and healthy snacks will be among the many activities offered during Healthy Kids Day on Saturday.
The YMCA of South Hampton Roads holds the event every year, and Suffolk’s celebration will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Camp Arrowhead, 275 Kenyon Road.
“The main purpose is to encourage families to come out and learn about activities and healthy lifestyles so that we can hopefully combat some of the huge health concerns there are for children and families these days,” said Robbie Laughton, senior membership director for the Suffolk Family YMCA. “We’re trying through the Y to promote a healthier diet and a more active lifestyle.”
Saturday’s event is free and open to all, even if they’re not YMCA members. Last year’s event drew between 400 and 500 people, Laughton said.
“We anticipate several hundred people easily,” he said. “We just want people to come out.”
A variety of activities including face painting, balloon animals, relay races, Zumba and more will be available on site. Healthy snacks such as fresh fruit, subs and popcorn will be offered, along with water.
“Water is the only beverage we’re going to promote,” Laughton said.
Vendors including the Suffolk Fire & Rescue Fire Safety House will be on hand. Western Tidewater Community Services Board and American Red Cross will be available to talk about their programs. The YMCA will offer membership specials and allow people to sign up for summer camp on site.
Laughton said guests at the event will learn how to fight childhood obesity, Type 2 diabetes and other conditions through healthy eating and active living, and how the Y can help them do it.
“It’s better to do it when you’ve got a support system,” he said.
