Lakeland High School’s baseball team got a big win on the road Tuesday against Phoebus High School.

The Cavs shut out their Conference 27 by a score of 13-0. It was the first conference game for the Cavs this season. Lakeland had a rough first half of its schedule as the only 3A school in the Southeastern District. But in its first matchup against another 3A school, LHS performed well.

“You get excited anytime the kids can get a win and execute that way,” Cavs coach Davide Devers said. “I was excited for them. It has been a long time coming. The back half of the schedule comes back around to us a little bit better.”

The Cavs think this was a good way to start off conference play for them. They have six more games remaining before the conference tournament and believe they can build momentum during that time.

Chase Lewis had a good game Tuesday, going 4-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Cody Anderson went 2-4, with one run scored and an RBI.

After going scoreless in the first inning, Lakeland scored no less than three runs in each inning after. The Cavs pitching staff allowed only two hits. Andrew Kelley earned the win.

A shutout is always a confidence booster for a team.

“I think the shutout can be credited to how well we’ve played defense all year long,” Devers said. “More so for us, it has been about getting the ball rolling offensively, and I think we did a good job of doing that out there, too.”

Devers wants to see his team build on Tuesday’s performance. Lakeland will face Phoebus again Friday, but this time Lakeland will be at home. The game starts at 4:30 p.m.
