Nansemond River High School graduate Calah Savage was recently selected to the All-Capital Athletic Conference team as a catcher for Christopher Newport University.
The freshman catcher and former Lady Warrior was one of 10 CNU players who made up the team which led the conference. They recently won the CAC title, going 31-8.
Savage has a batting average of .334 for the season. As of right now, she has 32 hits, 15 runs and 18 RBIs. She also has four home runs. For Savage, she couldn’t have asked for a better start to her collegiate career.
“I came into CNU preparing to fight for a spot on the field,” she said. “I knew I had to work hard and constantly prove that I could do well when I got the chance.”
Over the course of her freshman year, she developed her communication skills behind the plate. Her hitting improved as she got used to college pitching.
“I had to get used to college pitching, which is way different from high school,” she said. “Most collegiate pitchers live outside, which I had to adjust to.”
In her time at Nansemond River, she was an all-conference and all-region selection. She was also a second-team all-state selection. As a team, Nansemond River won numerous conference championships and a regional championship. Coming from a successful high school team, it helped with her adjustment to a successful college team. She hates to lose, so stepping into the CNU situation was an amazing feeling for her.
CNU will now wait to begin NCAA tournament play on May 11. The team finds out its first opponent May 8. Savage feels good about where her team is right now.
“All these teams are conference champions or close to it,” she said. “I feel if we continue to play the way we have been playing, we have a very good shot at winning the regional tournament. We work hard every day to get better and be better than other teams.”
