Chowan University freshman and former Nansemond River High School standout Corey Fago has been named CIAA Rookie of the Year in his first college baseball season.

During the regular season, Fago appeared in 11 games on the mound, pitching 23 innings in relief. The freshman recorded a 2-0 record, allowing a .218 opponent batting average.

“I think my freshman season has gone pretty well so far,” Fago said. “I’ve enjoyed the success I am having. I feel more comfortable on the mound now than I have ever been.”

Fago helped his team to a second place finish in the conference this year. Before his freshman year started, Fago didn’t know what to expect.

“Once we started playing, I started finding more and more success,” he said. “For next year, I’d like to increase my velocity and also be able to spot up my fast ball better.”

Fago admits the success wasn’t something he saw coming. His goals were just to be ready whenever he was called on and just go in and get the job done. The fact that Fago has been able to be successful continuing his baseball career has been the most enjoyable thing for him in his first year.

Chowan finished with a 27-25 record this year. The team has had its ups and downs but finished the season on a relatively strong note, making it to the conference championship.

Fago competes with an added edge. His brother motivates him because he can no longer play the game, so the Chowan freshman does the best he can on the field for him.

Along with getting Rookie of the Year, he also made the CIAA All-Rookie team.

With the former Nansemond River standout starting off his collegiate career strong, it is easy to see that the future is bright as his career progresses.

Fago was a part of the first state championship baseball team at Nansemond River last year.
