Healthy fun for Suffolk in June

HealthySuffolk has upcoming events in June that will encourage residents to get active and healthy this summer, as schools let out and people are outside more.

“We want to capitalize on the fact that people are out and about and have more free time,” said Shelley Barlow, garden coordinator for HealthySuffolk.

The nonprofit organization will begin the June festivities with the Art of Supper at the Planter’s Club on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. The event is an opportunity for local leaders to discuss healthy efforts over tasty appetizers and dinner and enjoy a silent auction with an array of items to bid upon.

The guest speaker this year will be Darryl Haley, a retired NFL player. Haley is a philanthropist and entrepreneur who urges young people to explore local parks and trails, and is an advocate for healthy eating and active lifestyles.

“He’ll definitely give people an idea of what giving back to the community means when it comes to fitness,” said Mia Byrd, operations and program manager for Healthy Suffolk.

The organization will hold the Summer Solstice Garden Gathering on June 20 at Johnson’s Gardens Inc. from 4 to 7 p.m. Local musician Win Winslow will be at the garden center with his guitar for live music.

The Neighborhood Harvest of Suffolk will provide salad options for hungry attendees. A chef will prepare samples of food with fresh ingredients provided by Griffin Farms, including squash, zucchini, onions, cucumber and other produce grown locally.

“We promote gardening as a way to more healthy eating choices,” Barlow said. “This is just one more way to encourage folks to garden.”

Tickets for Art of Supper are $65 and are available until Saturday.

Advance tickets for Summer Solstice Garden Gathering are $10 and $12 at the door. Kids under the age of 12 will get in for free.
