A Nansemond River High School girls’ basketball All-PenSouth performer has decided to continue her basketball career at the next level.
Nijha Shannon will attend St. Andrews University. She makes the second Lady Warrior to sign with a school along with Cassidy Simmons.
Shannon’s recruiting process was exciting. She knew this would be one of the most important decisions to make in her life, so she made sure to enjoy the process.
“I wanted to make the best choice for the next four years of my life,” she said. “The whole process was fun and exciting until I had to make a decision on what school I wanted to attend next.”
When Shannon went on her visit to the school, she fell in love with the coaching staff. She likes that they are outgoing and energetic. She felt like she was a good fit for the team and also liked St. Andrews’ campus life. St Andrews is located in Laurinburg, N.C., which is about four hours from Suffolk. Shannon mentioned that she didn’t want to be too far from home but wanted enough distance so she can still be independent.
Her family supported her in her decision. They wanted the Lady Warrior to make her own decision without any pressure.
The St. Andrews Lady Knights went 5-23 this past season. They are a NAIA school, a part of Appalachian Athletic Conference.
Shannon was a key component to a Nansemond River team that was the regular season PenSouth champion and clinched a berth to the 5A South regional tournament. She was also a second-team All-PenSouth performer.
At St. Andrews, she plans to major in biology with a minor in sports and recreation. Shannon wants to come in and earn a role immediately at St. Andrews. For now, she will continue with her training process so that she will be ready in the fall.
