Germany grocery store chain Lidl announced on June 26 the grand openings of a new store in the Western Branch community of Chesapeake.
The store will open this Thursday at 8 a.m. after a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:40 a.m.
The announcement comes after Lidl opened its first 10 U.S. stores on June 15, including locations in Virginia Beach and Hampton. The company has also announced plans to build a fourth regional headquarters and distribution center Cartersville, Ga.
“We are excited to announce new growth and investment in our U.S. expansion,” Brendan Proctor, president and chief executive officer of Lidl US, stated in the press release.
The Portsmouth Boulevard store and other locations will have games, activities, prizes and giveaways throughout the grand opening weekend.
The first 100 shoppers to arrive at the store will receive a wooden coin, each potentially worth up to $100 in Lidl gift cards. There will also be deals and free samples for store products.
“It’s a great chance for customers to come out and try our amazing products,” said Lidl U.S. spokesman William Harwood.
Lidl operates more than 10,000 stores in 28 countries, with its first U.S. headquarters established in 2015 in Arlington County. The company announced in May plans for up to 100 stores on the East Coast by summer 2018, creating a total of 5,000 jobs in the process.
The Chesapeake location is expected to hire 40 to 55 employees locally, Harwood said.
“We’re here because of the great employees that we have,” he said. “We’re extremely proud to have a great workforce that’s allowed us to be here and open the store.”
