Crews extinguish attic blaze

Suffolk Fire & Rescue battled a heavy residential fire in oppressive heat for the second day in a row on Saturday.
The fire was reported at 5:25 p.m. in the 300 block of Festival Court. The first unit arrived at 5:32 p.m. and found heavy smoke showing from the home. Crews found heavy fire in the attic and were able to keep it contained to the attic, marking it under control at 6:07 p.m.
Two adults were home at the time of the fire but were able to escape. Fire crews searched the home and were able to locate the family’s cat safely. There were no injuries.
The residents, three adults and one child, were displaced and will be assisted by the American Red Cross. The fire marshal’s office determined the cause to be a lightning strike.
Friday afternoon’s fire happened in the 200 block of Friar Court. Nearly 50 firefighters worked in 10-minute shifts followed by 30 minutes of rehab due to the extreme heat. There were no injuries in that fire, but three adults and one child were displaced.
