Classic cars, delicious food and live music will fill the streets of Suffolk’s Driver community this weekend when its popular, family-friendly festival returns once again.

The 24th annual Driver Days festival will draw hundreds of visitors this Saturday and Sunday for vendors with clever crafts and tasty food, carnival games, pony and train rides and much more.

Saturday will feature the second-annual StrongWILL Fun Run and Walk and the Driver Days Car Show. The annual parade will show off the creativity of local Boy Scouts, sports teams, cheering squads and others.

Judges will choose the most creative float this year to win a $100 Visa gift card, said Terri Moore, Driver Days committee chairwoman.

“There’s a lot of creativity out there,” Moore said.

Saturday will also offer a Buffalo Wild Wings eating contest for those that can handle the heated flavors. Colonial Cobb’s ventriloquism will be on display at Arthur’s General Store, and bands Waylin’ on Waylon and River Boyz will perform in the afternoon.

The cornhole tournament on Saturday will have a $3,000 payout for the top four teams, with 80 players coming from as far as Maryland, West Virginia and North Carolina, according to Ken Parsons, cornhole organizer and owner of the Knot Hole Station in Driver. The Sunday tournament is expected to have a $1,000 payout.

“This will be one of the best gatherings of competition that this area has had,” Parsons said.

Sunday will have the Sherri Parker Memorial Poker Run and Bike Show, with a parade of bikes in the afternoon. Dogs dressed like cowboys and sheep will be seen at the pet costume contest. The Daughters of the King and Tailgate Down will keep the music going in the afternoon.

Children will bounce off each other like two-legged bumper cars in Knocker Ball, join the Suffolk Rocks craze inside a rock-painting tent and find even more fun in the Children’s Amusement Area.

The free event is an open invitation for the public to come visit Driver and enjoy the entertainment and surprises found in this community.

“It’s a strong-knit, little community, and there’s a lot to do out there that people normally wouldn’t see that they get to enjoy first-hand,” Moore said. “Driver is a fun little place. They just need to stop in and check it out.”
