Two local churches have teamed up for their second annual Cancer Awareness Walk on Saturday.

The walk, hosted by Healing Chapel Baptist Church and Metropolitan Baptist Church, will raise money for No One Fights Alone, a local charity that assists Sentara Obici Hospital cancer patients with needed funds.

“So many people in our community and our church families were being stricken by cancer in one form or the other,” said Sharon Daughtrey, a team member for the walk who is a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church. “We wanted to find a way to help them on a local level.”

Last year’s walk was the first one, and Daughtrey suggested helping the No One Fights Alone organization both years. They helped her sister when she was fighting cancer, she said.
“They helped my sister a lot, and I felt really strongly about this organization,” she said. “We decided that was the organization we would target.”

This year’s walk will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Healing Chapel, 2375 Godwin Blvd. Registration begins at 9 a.m.

The walk will leave the church, loop past Elephant’s Fork Elementary School and arrive back at the church. Walkers can choose a one-mile or two-mile route.

Last year’s walk, held at Metropolitan, attracted about 75 participants and raised almost $1,000 for the cause, Daughtrey said.

“This year we’re planning on at least doubling that and continuing each year,” she said. “We’d love for all the citizens of Suffolk and surrounding areas to come walk with us.”

Daughtrey said the churches plan to make it an annual event and anticipate that the hosting church will alternate each year.

Registration is accepted the morning of the walk and costs $10 for adults or $5 for ages 6 to 17. Children 5 and under can participate for free.

T-shirts and hats will be available for sale. Shirts are $10 for smaller sizes and $12 for larger sizes. Hats are $5.

Daughtrey said all are welcome to the event.

“We’d just like anybody anywhere to come join us,” she said.
