Three constitutional officers are running unopposed for re-election this year.

Commonwealth’s Attorney C. Phillips “Phil” Ferguson, Sheriff E.C. Harris and Treasurer Ron Williams are up for election to their positions.

Ferguson has been the commonwealth’s attorney since 1978. He is a graduate of the Marshall Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary.

The commonwealth’s attorney is the chief prosecutor and manages a staff of more than 30 attorneys, paralegals, victim/witness assistants, community outreach personnel and office administrators.

Harris has been sheriff since Jan. 1, when 23-year sheriff Raleigh H. Isaacs Sr. retired. Harris was Isaacs’ chief deputy from 2014 to 2016. He had previously worked as a deputy sheriff, investigator in the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office, a detective and officer in the Suffolk Police Department, an officer in the Chesapeake Bay-Bridge Tunnel Police Department and a military police officer in the U.S. Army.

The sheriff’s office provides courthouse security and serves civil papers, in addition to other functions.

Williams is the current treasurer of the city. The treasurer is responsible for collecting state and local funds as well as disbursing, investing and accounting for local funds.
