What’s better than carving a pumpkin on Halloween? Well, filling that pumpkin with a concoction that creates green slime that oozes from all its new holes, of course — at least if you’re in the third grade.

That’s just what third-grade students at Kilby Shores Elementary School got to do on Tuesday, with the help of a group of students from the Rho Kappa group at Lakeland High School.

The event was part of the Lakeland group’s mentoring partnership with the elementary school, and it illustrates a great example of the kind of community service that officials with Suffolk Public Schools hoped would be encouraged with their new community-service graduation requirement.

Students from Lakeland — about 20 of them participated on Tuesday — get community service hours, they get to have a little fun in the process and they get to learn the value of being a role model for someone younger than them. On the other side of the equation, students from Kilby Shores benefit from seeing an example of service, along with spending time with older students from whom they can learn great life lessons in a non-threatening environment.

And finally, teachers at the elementary school get help with projects — such as the jack-o-lantern carving event — that might have proved too labor intensive without the help of the teenagers who were involved.
