A Suffolk rock enthusiast used her creativity to raise an impressive donation for the Suffolk Animal Shelter on Saturday.

Georgette Sandefur spent about a month making decorative rocks for her “Granny S Rocks” Facebook group. The group name and her Facebook handle “Granny Sandefur” were inspired by what her grandchildren Rowyn Smith and Corbin Perkins affectionately call her, she said.

Since Sept. 27, when Sandefur wasn’t working shifts at QVC in Suffolk, she’s spent long hours on Fridays and Saturdays making rocks. She then swapped them with Facebook group members for dog and cat food, toys, leashes and other supplies for the shelter.

“I’m a simple person, to be honest,” she said. “I go to work, I come home, and I do my rocks. That’s me.”

She said members often ask for specific designs of gem stones, ribbons, sparkly decals and other materials. She then meets with them at noon and 6 p.m. on Fridays at the Rite Aid on Holland Road, she said.

She had a goal of 30 bags of food in 30 days.

“I exceeded that goal in about 10 days,” she said.

Sandefur collected 786 pounds of dog food, 244 cans of wet food, 80 pounds of cat litter and 31 toys, along with bleach, soap, paper towels, leashes, collars and other treats.

She brought her haul to the shelter on Saturday with the help of her family and staff members. A basket of newly decorated rocks was also left for staff, she said.

She said she’s grateful for all of the Facebook group members that helped make this happen.

“I can create rocks, but if I didn’t have the swappers, I wouldn’t have been able to do it,” she said.

Sandefur is already on to the next project. She is exchanging rocks with members of her group for assisted living and elderly care supplies, she said.

“We’re off to the next one,” she said.
