Sometimes, it seems like the world we live in is hopeless.

Mass shootings and other tragedies both natural and manmade have broken the hearts of many in the last few months. Devastating hurricanes, destructive wildfires, massacres in Las Vegas and Sutherland Springs, the worst of humanity on display in Charlottesville in August and the tragic and senseless violence it engendered, and of course the seemingly inescapable political vitriol that infiltrates everything from our friends list to our dinner tables — all have combined to wear us down and, for many of us, make us feel that there is no more hope left in the world.

But Christians have the hope offered by the saving grace of Jesus Christ, and a couple of local clergy groups are hoping to share that with all of Suffolk this Sunday.

No, you don’t have to get up early, put on certain clothes and go to a certain church. They’re holding the event at King’s Fork Middle School, a central location where everyone can feel welcome.

Suffolk Clergy United and the Suffolk Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance are organizing the 5 p.m. Vigil for Hope and Unity. They started planning it after last Sunday’s shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas, which killed 26 and injured 20 who were worshiping at the town’s First Baptist Church.

But the event won’t be designed to respond just to the church shooting but rather to everything that seems broken. In other words, they’re hoping to minister to everyone who feels broken and hopeless, no matter the reason.

It might be that all of the things going on in our world are dragging them down. Or it may be that they are dealing with a family issue, medical problem, work stress or something else more personal.

Whatever the reason, the local pastors — a couple of groups that are diverse racially and denominationally and come from churches all over the city — are coming together to offer hope.

The event will also spread hope beyond those who attend and beyond its time limits. Visitors will be able to take a card to send a note of encouragement to someone they feel may need it, whether that’s someone in Sutherland Springs or someone they know personally.

We commend the two ministers’ groups for organizing this event and encourage anyone who needs it to attend. We guarantee you will come away more hopeful.
