A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted nine people, including a Carrollton couple and their grown son, on charges involving an alleged drug trafficking and money laundering conspiracy.

Shirley Burnett, 62, and Robert Burnett, 64, both are charged with conspiracy to launder money, according to a press release from the office of U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Dana J. Boente.

Their 37-year-old son, Alex Burnett, of Hampton, is charged with being the head of the criminal organization that allegedly distributed heroin, cocaine, cocaine base and marijuana, according to the release. He faces charges including continuing a criminal enterprise, conspiracy to distribute drugs, conspiracy to launder money, distribution of heroin and possessing a firearm while a convicted felon. The maximum penalty for those charges is two life terms plus 50 years.

The press release states the 9Rounds Gym in Peninsula Town Center, owned by Alex and Shirley Burnett, was used for drug deals. Robert and Shirley Burnett allegedly laundered proceeds from the drug distribution, along with Ada Rodriguez, 36, of Jacksonville, Fla., and Eleonora Peronuzzi, 36, of Newport News. Rodriguez and Peronuzzi were both girlfriends of Alex Burnett and mothers of his children, according to court documents.

The grand jury also handed down indictments against Jordan Davis, 24, of Williamsburg; Charles McMillan, 30, of Newport News; Charles Bailey Jr., 54, of Newport News; and Mario Barrett, 41, of Hampton.

Court documents state Alex Burnett is a six-time convicted felon. The investigation determined that he is a member of Gangsta Killa Bloods, a subset of the Bloods criminal street gang, which operates a drug trafficking organization responsible for multi-kilogram quantities of cocaine and heroin being trafficked and distributed throughout Hampton Roads, according to the court documents.

The documents state that two accounts belonging to Robert Burnett and Shirley Burnett “show large quantities of cash flowing through that does not appear to have a legitimate source.” They also owned multiple vehicles and homes, the liens on most of which were paid off in a lump sum mere months after their purchase. The total amount of bank deposits, vehicles owned and homes owned far exceeded their legitimate income, the court documents state.
