Cavs fall in semis

The football season has ended for Lakeland High School after an 18-13 loss on the road to York High School.

Turnovers were the name of the game for both Lakeland and York on Friday, but York was able to make plays at the right time.

York was able to get into Lakeland territory on its first possession, but Lakeland had control of the first quarter after a 96-yard touchdown pass from Tyquan Holloman to Deondre Little put the Suffolk team up 7-0.

In the second quarter, Lakeland was unable to get any points on the board. At the end of the first half, York started to put together a solid drive to try to get points on the board before halftime. The Falcons got all the way down to Lakeland’s three-yard line but were unable to punch the ball in for a touchdown because of Lakeland’s swarming defense.

At the beginning of the second half, both Lakeland and York traded turnovers. After an interception thrown by Holloman, York fumbled on the following possession three plays later.

York’s quarterback finally connected with Adam Lytle for an 11-yard touchdown with one minute to go in the third quarter to cut Lakeland’s lead to one.

Both team’s defenses were stout for most of the fourth quarter until inside of three minutes. A Falcons one-yard run with 2:45 left to play in the fourth gave them their first lead of the game, 12-7.

Lakeland did not go down easy. On the following possession, Holloman connected with Damonta Hawkins for a 39-yard touchdown to put Lakeland back up 13-12.

York they marched down the field on the following possession, and Lytle caught his second touchdown pass of the game with 35 seconds remaining game to give York an 18-13. The Cavs were unable to respond.

Lakeland’s defense forced five turnovers.

The Cavs finished the season with a 5-7 record.
