William Powell

On Monday, Nov. 27, 2017, William “Rufus” Powell, 79, of Suffolk, went to be with the Lord. He was born in Sunbury, N.C. on Nov. 22, 1938. He is predeceased by his parents, Hallett and Pearl Powell.

Rufus was a retiree from SUPSHIP Portsmouth and dedicated to his family, church and community. Over the years of his life, he enjoyed working and volunteering in a variety of jobs and positions. He was a Ruritan, a member of the Joyce Ann Harrell Sunday School Class and Bethlehem Christian Church. Rufus was proud to represent the Holy Neck Borough from 1998 to 2002 on the Suffolk City Council and was selected to serve as vice mayor from 2000 to 2002.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Katherine Powell; son and daughter-in-law, William Rufus Powell Jr. and Kathleen; daughter and son-in-law, Susan P. Roberts and Dale; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby Powell and Peggy; sister, Frances Harrell; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends.

A funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, at Bethlehem Christian Church with the Rev. Matt Winters officiating. Burial will follow at Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation prior to the service from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
