Charles Linwood Sims Jr., 89, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, in Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk.

Mr. Sims was born on March 31, 1928, in Bumpass, in Louisa County northwest of Richmond.

Mr. Sims was the longtime parts manager for the former Suffolk Equipment Company, an International Harvester dealer, later Navstar dealer.

He graduated from Louisa County High School in 1945 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a seaman 1st class during World War II. He served stateside until January 1947 at Bainbridge Naval Station in Maryland.

At Suffolk Equipment Company, Mr. Sims was well known for his photographic memory of the inventory. He could share long parts numbers over the phone with coworkers and tell them exactly where to find the part. Farmers repaid his help with bushels of fresh corn, butterbeans and other crops, which his family would enjoy during the winter.

Mr. Sims retired in 2009 with more than 50 years in the farm and auto parts industries, a career he loved from the beginning to the end.

Mr. Sims was a longtime member of Magnolia United Methodist Church and its Shaw Bible Class. Before Magnolia, he had been a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

Mr. Sims is survived by his four children, Charles L. Sims III (Susan), of Suffolk, David Lee Sims (Rosalie), of Topsail, N.C., Cathy Reeder (Jim), of Stuart, Fla., and Rebecca Adams (Cliff), of Frisco, Texas; and two sisters, Alice Spence, of North Charleston, S.C., and Ruth Nickel (Nick), of Oakfield, Wis. Survivors also include his godson, Morgan Andress (Sarah), of Richmond; seven grandchildren, David Sims (Candy), of Ocean Springs, Miss., Eric Sims (Imee) and Matthew Sims (Leah Fleming), of Las Vegas, Nev.; Peter Sims (Elizabeth), of Owensboro, Ky.; Stephanie Sims (Trayce McPherson), of Suffolk, Natalie Sims, of Newport News, and Kimberly Reeder (Derek Nelson), of Port St. Lucie, Fla. He also is survived by 14 great-grandchildren: and several great-great-grandchildren. He loved them all dearly.

He is predeceased by his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Helen Guy Davies Sims, who died in 2009. They were inseparable in life and are together again now. He also is predeceased by his parents, Ruth Gay Branch and Charles Linwood Sims Sr., of Bumpass, and four brothers.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, 2017, at Magnolia United Methodist Church, Suffolk, with a reception at the church to follow. Burial will be private. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
