Lakeland High School’s boys’ basketball team got its first win of the season on the road Friday against Grassfield High School.

It is the first win for Lakeland this season, which puts its record at 1-2. The 55-45 win is a good accomplishment for a Lakeland team that returned no players with starting varsity experience.

Coach Clint Wright Sr. felt accomplished with his team’s road win Friday night.

“It felt good,” Wright said. “I felt we finally executed on all levels of the floor. We felt this could have happened a couple of games ago, but better late than never.”

In the first two games, Lakeland had some close losses. But on Friday night, the Cavs’ defense helped propel them to a win. The Cavs forced Grassfield to make multiple passes before getting the look they wanted. Lakeland was defending for 15 seconds on some possessions. Grassfield is a team that likes to get shots up, and Lakeland wanted to limit their opportunities as much as possible.

Lakeland had not won a third quarter all season until Friday night, when they outscored Grassfield 17-15. In the fourth quarter, Lakeland continued their defensive onslaught, which led to them becoming 1-2. After the game, the Cavs were ecstatic about their win.

“You are talking about a team many thought may not even win a game this season,” Wright said. “Because of our lack of experience, people may see us on the schedule and say, ‘Hey, that is an easy one.’ But the guys feel like we should be winning, and hopefully, this is the first of many to come.”

Clint Wright Jr. led the Cavs in scoring Friday night with 18 points. He went 9-of-10 from the free-throw line and added a trio of three-pointers. Quentin Livingston finished with 11 points and seven rebounds for the Cavs.

Lakeland will take on Western Branch High School on the road Tuesday in another tough environment. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
