November was another month of record growth for the Port of Virginia, according to a Thursday press release.

The Port moved 240,570 twenty-foot equivalent units of cargo, handled nearly 20,000 tons of breakbulk cargo and processed more than 6,500 new import cars in November, per the press release.

John F. Reinhart, chief executive officer and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, stated in the press release that November was the fourth consecutive month of growth in auto imports.

“Our TEU volume was modest, up nearly two percent,” Reinhart stated. “We showed slight container growth at Virginia Inland Port, and our efforts to diversify our cargo mix with non-containerized cargo are showing promise.

“Though we are still processing peak-season volume, we are beginning to see a tapering-off trend, as anticipated.”

The first bundle of rail-mounted gantry cranes for Virginia International Gateway is expected to arrive in January, and work at Norfolk International Terminals is expected to pick up in the beginning of 2018 as well, Reinhart stated.

“Our focus is managing these two projects while staying safe and maintaining our service and efficiency levels,” he stated. “This will add cost while we manage through the expansion, and we are prepared for that eventuality.”
