Parker published her book through Authorhouse Self Publishing on Oct. 14. It is currently available for purchase online from Barnes & Noble in paperback for $16.99, and on Amazon.com for the same price or a $3.99 Kindle edition.

“The story unfolds from an adult perspective, revisiting a childhood memory about birds and her desire to be at school,” Parker said.

Though this is Parker’s first published work of fiction, she has written poetry and newspaper articles for more than 20 years. The Suffolk resident is a former Holland-area correspondent for the Suffolk News-Herald and currently teaches third grade at Elephant’s Fork Elementary School.

Parker graduated from Georgie D. Tyler High School in 1967, when it served as Isle of Wight County Schools’ high school for black students until integration in 1969. The site on which the building stood is now the location of Georgie D. Tyler Middle School.
