An annual race for a cure is ready to kick off this year with a new location and an open invitation for runners as well as riders.

The  annual American Diabetes Association Hampton Roads Tour de Cure will be April 28 at the Suffolk Executive Airport, rather than King’s Fork High School, which has hosted the event for the last six years.

The new location will offer more space and new routes, and there will also be a new 5K run and walk at the location as well, according to Robin Kantor, ADA Hampton Roads director of development.

“The national initiative is to have this new festival and event format that can cater to teams that don’t cycle,” she said. “It’s another option for people to come out and still enjoy the day and participate.”

The event raises funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy efforts, with thousands of participants each year. Kantor said there will be more health screenings available this year, plus kids’ activities and a family fitness area.

About 400 participants have signed up for the event. The overall fundraising goal this year is $450,000, and $114,000 has been raised towards that.

“We have a hefty goal, and we’re looking for new people,” Kantor said.

A kickoff event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. this Thursday at Roger Brown’s Restaurant and Sports Bar in Portsmouth, 316 High St. The free event will have light fare and refreshments.
