Suffolk track and field athletes will compete in the Suffolk Invitational held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton this weekend.
Suffolk will be headlining the competition, with Lakeland High School, Nansemond River High School and King’s Fork High School all expected to compete. It is one of the final meets before the postseason starts for each respective school.
The regional championship meet for the Warriors will begin next weekend. For Lakeland and King’s Fork, their regional championships will be Feb. 13 and Feb. 14, respectively. Schools could use this meet to fine-tune things and to try to get more qualifiers to the state meet, which Bulldogs coach Shawn Warren is looking to do.
“We are hopeful to get a few more kids qualified for the state meet,” Warren said. “We also would like to improve our times for seeding purposes heading into the regional meet.”
Nasir Davis of King’s Fork and Deondre Little of Lakeland are going to be two athletes who are expected to stand out in the sprinting events. Lakeland has a strong boys’ 4×800 relay team that can potentially make some noise at the meet. Nansemond River has several standouts but could be selective with what events in which they do participate.
The boys’ 4×200 for the Warriors will compete in New York Millrose Games this weekend. They currently have the country’s No. 2 time in the 4×200 and will look to improve on that in New York.
“We will race against the U.S. No. 1 team, so it should be a shootout,” sprinter Jevon Waller said. “Hopefully we can lower our time some more and can take the U.S. No. 1 time.”
The Suffolk Stars Invitational will feature teams mostly from the Hampton Roads area with a couple of schools from the Richmond area and North Carolina expected to compete as well.
