Event beats gender norms

There’s no reason a woman can’t be an electrician. There’s no reason a man can’t be a nurse. The folks who find something wrong with those things are misguided.
Those were the lessons during the annual Non-Traditional Extravaganza held Thursday by the Suffolk Public Schools Career and Technical Education Advisory Council.
Non-traditional careers are defined as careers in which at least 75 percent of the workforce is the opposite gender.
When it’s difficult for young people to figure out what they want to do with the rest of their lives — or even have some idea — it’s important for them to be exposed to more opportunities. Young women should know they have options like becoming an airline pilot, architect, clergy, farmer, funeral director, mail carrier, welder and many specialties in the health care field, including dentists, optometrists and hospital administrators.
Young men should know they have options like becoming a court reporter, a nurse, a physical therapist, a social worker, a librarian or an elementary or middle school teacher.
The Suffolk Public Schools Career and Technical Education Advisory Council has been holding this special event for many years and in doing so has demonstrated an excellent commitment to helping Suffolk high-schoolers explore as many options as possible for their future careers.
We’re certain more than a few alumni remember that event every time they go to work in a non-traditional career, and we believe many more will in the future if the event continues.
